Sulphur Mountain Gondola is a must-do sightseeing attraction for your vacation in Banff National Park, providing spectacular scenery and photography opportunities - the easy way.
You’ll reach the top of Sulphur Mountain ascending 698m (2,292ft) in a mere eight minutes aboard a four-passenger gondola car that graciously affords each occupant a full-window view. Up the adventure ante by hiking along the South East Ridge Trail for delivery to Sulphur’s true summit. Or follow Parks Canada’s self-guided interpretive trails and boardwalks to the Sanson Peak Cosmic Ray Station. Once on Sanson Peak, you can learn about the mountain’s namesake – park meteorologist and museum curator Norman Bethune Sanson, who first hiked to the mountaintop on snowshoes in 1896. He continued to do so nearly every week for 30 years to record weather observations. In all, Sanson made the trip over 1,000 times – his last climb aged 84 years.
Construction on the Sulphur Mountain Gondola began in the 1958 fall thanks to the Swiss mountain guide John Jaeggi who opened the first teahouse on the mountaintop in 1940. Running the teahouse was no easy feat since all the supplies, including the water for the tea, had to be carried up the mountain on horseback. Jaeggi later built a halfway station and offered his guests rides to the summit on a modified tractor comprising a small platform with a railing upon which the passengers could stand for their ride to the top. |
