Highway 95 south, between Panorama and Fernie, holds a delightful secret. Sixty-five kilometres (40 miles) south of Invermere, British Columbia and 17.5 kilometres (10.8 miles) down the Whiteswan Forestry Road, you will find Whiteswan Provincial Park. The park is home to the bubbling, soothing and somewhat smelly all-natural Lussier Hot Springs, two mountain lakes (Whiteswan and Alces) and numerous campsites. Lussier Hot Springs is one of last undeveloped hot springs in the area and definitely the most accessible natural spring around. Although the dirt-road drive into Lussier has some scary moments (see note below), it is well maintained. If you have the time, this side trip is definitely worthwhile. Once you sink your weary bones into the tranquil steamy waters your worries will dissolve. Rest peacefully in one of the different temperature pools that are tucked into the mountainside source as the Lussier river dances to its sparkling music beside you. If you are brave enough, you can hop into the freezing river to cool off. Locals call it a ‘polar dip’ for good reason!
Use extreme caution on the Whiteswan Lake road at all times. Care must be taken when driving the canyon portion (marked as kilometre 15 to kilometre 18) of the access road to the park. For improved safety, turn your headlights on. Be aware that mine ore trucks and oversized loaded logging trucks are on the route. Always give them the right of way!
