Truly a masterpiece of ski hills, Kicking Horse Resort offers a wonderful challenge to every level of skier, especially appealing to experts. Golden, British Columbia, nestled between the Purcell and Rocky Mountains and surrounded by the magnificent Dog Tooth range, is home to Kicking Horse. Boasting the highest vertical in the Rockies at 1260 metres (4,133 feet), the resort is famous for its champagne powder.

Kicking Horse has five lifts: one gondola, three chairs and a Magic Carpet lift. It has 2,750 acres of lift accessible terrain, with almost half the runs split between beginner and intermediate levels and advanced to expert making up the rest. Once at the resort, an eight-person gondola will whisk you from base to summit in 12 minutes. At the summit, you find yourself perched upon a ridge looking directly down three huge faces scattered with trees and rocky cliffs. The breathtaking scenery is just the beginning – you are in for an awesome day!

Straight ahead you will see the famous Eagle Eye Restaurant (see below for details). To the right, a cat track that will ease your way down to some gentler slopes, or if you like, you can pick a spot above the ridge and jump in! From the ridge, you will be treated to some steep turns in almost guaranteed powder stashes. Keep heading right and will arrive at the Stairway to Heaven chair. Heaven’s Door Yurt staff will serve you up a hot chocolate and advice on the best lines down your own personal piece of white, fluffy heaven.

If you decide to venture left around the patrol shack, you will find yourself at the top of a delicious bowl with plenty of tempting lines. Remember though, this is just the beginning of a great day of skiing and riding. Pace yourself! With cat tracks crisscrossing the mountain, the hill is like a wedding cake. Each layer offers a taste of something new and endless miles of terrain. Prepare to have tired legs and a big grin at the end of your day.

The cozy day lodge at the base of the mountain offers a comfortable ambiance that provides the perfect backdrop for a first-tracks coffee, lunch or a place to enjoy a day-end beverage. Here you can tell lies about the air you took and watch the last of the die-hards’ ski down the mountain.

If you don’t want to ski and just want to check out the views, the top of the resort features Canada’s highest restaurant, the Eagle Eye. With 360-degree views, Vancouver architect and brainchild of Kicking Horse Oberto Oberti has produced a lovely, lofty retreat. Grab a quick hot drink here before a long run, or use it as an afternoon’s respite – the atmosphere and service are sure to impress. A delightfully decadent dining experience could include herb-crusted goat's cheese, grilled Nunavit caribou or a warm mango samosa. Of course, the restaurant is licensed so you will be sure to find something to warm your spirits as well!

Located at the TransCanada Highway and Highway 95 junction, Golden is a busy very town. Long thriving on the areas’ natural resources, this industrial area is just starting to attract tourist dollars. With the redevelopment of Kicking Horse Resort, the town is quickly becoming highlighted on the savvy tourist’s map.
