Up, down or sideways, there’s no topping a Canadian Rocky Mountain high. Hiking or climbing to a Rockies’ summit, however, can be an arduous and time-consuming endeavour. Fortunately, the cable lift was invented for those who need a little extra oomph to experience the mountains from a bird’s-eye perch.

  GET A LIFT

  Sulphur Mountain Gondola
In Banff, the Sulphur Mountain Gondola will take you to a Canadian National Historic Site on the mountain’s summit 2,281m (7,482ft) above sea level...

  Lake Louise Gondola
Many have experienced the views atop Lake Louise ski area when the surrounding landscapes are blanketed in snow – but the view is equally appealing, if somewhat different, on a sunny, Rocky Mountain summer day. When the snow disappears at the ski area, a gondola carries visitors on a fourteen-minute ride to an elevation of 2,088 metres (6,850 feet) where complimentary interpretive programs are available daily, including theatre presentations and guided walks. The Wildlife Interpretation Centre is also available for guests to enjoy and programs highlight environmental initiatives within Banff National Park and the adaptations both plants and animals have made to survive in this remarkable landscape.

  Kicking Horse Gondola
Kicking Horse Resort in Golden, British Columbia, boasts Canada’s first walk-in, eight-passenger gondola, able to whisk you to a vantage-point 3,413 metres (11,266 feet) high in 12 minutes, from where you can gaze upon an endless snow-capped panorama that forms the Rockies, Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges. Once at the top, you can explore four different interpretive trails ranging from short walks to adventurous hikes. Then, after the crisp mountain air has piqued your appetite, you can treat yourself at the Eagle’s Eye, Canada’s highest restaurant perched at 2,350m (7,705ft) above sea level.

  Jasper Tramway
You may not have aspirations to climb the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, but from the Jasper Tramway you’ll have a great view of it. Mount Robson is just one of the spectacular views you’ll get standing 3,954 metres (over 12,970 feet). Accompanied by a certified guide, a large, enclosed tramway takes visitors on a seven-minute ride to the summit of Whistlers Mountain, just outside the Jasper townsite. At the top, stroll the scenic boardwalk area or enjoy the backcountry hiking trails that start where the tramway leaves off. There are great opportunities to see whistling marmots, bighorn sheep and other alpine inhabitants. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy anything from a light snack to a full meal in the cozy Treeline Restaurant.
