The Banff Centre, formerly the Banff School of Fine Arts, is a far cry from study hall. If you’re interested in the arts in any shape or form, a stroll through the campus at the Banff Centre is well worthwhile. Set on Tunnel Mountain’s slopes, this world-renowned facility hosts some of the world’s foremost composers, musicians, writers, dancers and artists throughout the year. The summer is a particularly good time, when the Banff Centre is alive with creative juices -- must be the inspiring locale. The campus’ first buildings went up in 1933 to house a theatre school. Thanks to a healthy dose of private funding and a continued effort for innovation, the centre is today one of the few cherished secrets that Bow Valley locals try to keep to their selves – a sophisticated venue to stimulate the mind after a stellar day playing in the mountains. What could be better?
The Banff Centre is divided into several divisions including the Centre for Management, the Centre for the Arts and the Centre for Mountain Culture, each achieving international recognition and acclaim. Nearly every evening throughout summer, you can take in a concert, a talk or visit a gallery. Throughout the year, the Playbill Series draws world, folk, jazz and blues musicians from around the globe. And, if the weather has left you feeling slumped, head to the Sally Borden Building, one of the best recreational facilities in which you’ll ever. . . well, recreate. There’s a climbing wall, squash courts, an indoor running track and a view of the mountains from the indoor pool. The Banff Centre is located at 107 Tunnel Mountain Drive, Banff.
